Blogging – A Simple Explanation of Why You Need To

— BLOGGING For Beginners

The #1 piece of advice from practically every social media marketing expert is this:  Get started BLOGGING.

“Blog” is short for “web log”. It is like a personal journal on the internet. It is a commentary that reflects the views from a real person rather than from a company, and if the blog is for a company, it makes the company seem more “real.” Like you’ll all be BF’s and hang out together, so you can trust them and buy their product.beach demonstrating SEO in blog

Here’s the experts’ advice:  Put a blog on your website, post great content onto your blog at regular intervals, and don’t pressure people (too much).  And then the web traffic will come to your site, your list of followers will grow huge, whereby you’ll sell your business for millions and retire to the beach to sip umbrella drinks.  Here are some important points:

Writing Your Own Content Versus Curating

Lots of blogs, perhaps a majority of them, say that curating content is as good as writing something new. What curating means is that you go to lots of other people’s blogs that you find mentioned on Twitter and Linkedin, you find one that is saying something somewhat interesting, and you copy it onto your own blog.

Although in high school you would have gotten in serious trouble for this, now you make sure that you give full credit to the writer and his/her company, and everyone is happy! Why? Because it gives them an incoming link – that means that by showing their blog address on your blog site, the search engines can follow the link from you to get to them with ease.  Every blogger needs inbound links for good SEO and will do almost anything to get them. Me too!

SEO – Search Engine Optimization

1. Rankings

You want your website to appear at the top of the first page when someone searches for the product or service that you offer.

Your website probably changes very little – your designer set it up to last. Google and other search engines are looking for sites that have a lot of information about whatever subject a person might type in as a search query. Google saw your website when you first put it on the web, and they gave it a ranking due to a complex algorithm (that changes constantly so that just when you get good at scamming it, it changes). As other sites come along with newer and/or better content, your site still has the old rank because nothing has changed on it – the search engines don’t even need to come back.

However, if you put fresh content into your blog (residing within your web site) with regularity, the search engines will see that they have to return and upgrade your ranking.

2. Keywords

Waiting for you after you post your blog

You need to decide on certain descriptive words that are KEY to your company – they describe your main product/service. “Mai Tai, beach bar, san diego” come to mind as interesting keywords. When someone types these words into Google, Google is going to search for that combination of words. If you have a mai tai bar in San Diego, then you want Google to find those words again and again on your site so Google will know that putting you on the first page of its search results is going to bring the searcher the most thorough information.

On your bar’s actual website you can only get by with saying the words “mai tai” under photos or in your menu, or maybe in a comment. (If you put those words all over the place, even where it doesn’t make sense, it is called “keyword stuffing” and will be spit upon.) But in your blog, you can tell how people rave about your new mai tai recipe, your mai tai umbrella stirrers, your mai tai glasses….you get the picture.

But you know, I suddenly am very thirsty and feel a strange craving to sit outside and watch the sunset, so I think I’ll let Grant Griffiths of Headway Themes  finish this up for me.  And Grant won’t be angry that I used some of his stuff – he will be happy because his blog will receive an inbound link. (Although he might rather have the mai tai.)

3. Website Volume

blog volume for SEOKeep in mind that a blog is simply a website that the bloggers can add content to as often as they want.  Each and every one of those blog posts you are doing is actually an individual web page with all of your information on it.  And each of the pages is one more opportunity for the search engines to find you and one more way for web users to find you.  The more pages you have online, the more pages you will have indexed by Google.  The more pages you have indexed by Google, the more leads you have the chance to generate.

The relationship between the number of pages you have indexed and the number of leads generated takes a drastic jump when a business has over 300 pages on their site.  Take a look at the graph if you don’t believe me.

Growth in leads accelerates significantly once a site achieves several hundred pages indexed by Google (300+).

Isn’t it true that the purpose of any marketing program is to generate leads?  Isn’t it also true, the more leads you generate, the more sales you should also generate?  And, if you are generating a new web page each and every time you post to your blog, doesn’t it make sense that you should be blogging?

What can a blog do for my online marketing presence?
