You already know that one of the most effective marketing tools you have is your email list. The names on it are people who have expressed interest in your business and your present customers.

Here’s the thing though – you’re talking to people at networking events, classes, seminars, farmer’s markets, conferences. You’re letting them escape! Maybe you get their business card, but then you have to email them, remind them who you are, and ask them to do something, which they won’t do because your email probably went to spam.

Or, these people are walking into your store, restaurant, salon, night club, coffeeshop, real estate open house, trade show booth, networking event, and you’re letting them leave without getting them to opt into your list! And it’s so easy to do.

Maybe you thought this was only for people who have a retail place? It isn’t! It’s for YOU whenever, wherever you are talking to people.

Grab your ipad, download an app called Thread for $9.99, customize the form fields, select a background photo and then come up with some sort of a deal that would entice them to join – like 25% off on their next purchase or a “qualify to win” something.  (This is what they say — it’s not quite that easy, so see instructions below.)

Carry your ipad with you when you’re meeting people, and instead of asking them to keep in touch and giving them your business card (good luck on this – you know where it’s going), ask them if they would sign up, and if they don’t love your posts they can unsubscribe immediately.

If you KEEP IT SIMPLE like the one on the right, when people are looking at you eye to eye, they’re going to do it – if only for the novelty of it.

Got a physical location? You always have an ipad sitting on your checkout desk, and if a person signs up, they get an immediate discount on their purchase – right then!

What Thread does:

You know what? I just sold myself on it – I attend networking stuff all the time. Why am I wasting time giving out cards? I’m going to download this app and use it myself.

NEWS FLASH – It’s a whole lot easier using the instructions below, and the author of the app, Vince, is responsive and helpful.  If you send me your email, I’ll send you several photos that you can use.

Instructions for Thread

Here’s a photo of my ipad –

1. Have a photo that you want to use for the left side of the screen all ready to go. It can be like the coffee shop photo at the top of this post, or a photo like I used on the right, or something with your logo that tells a story or shows what they’re going to win.  Email it to your ipad and store it with your photos, then browse for it when Thread tells you to so that it uploads.

2. For your Settings:

  • Signups – shows you all the people’s’ information that you have collected.
  • Account – shows your official information.
  • Forms – you can decide how much information you want to collect — I only need the email address.

  • Templates – this is not the fancy photo type of template stuff — this is where you decide what you want to say:
  • Entry Landing Page – this only gives you about 25 characters.
    For my Title I put “Great marketing 4 U”.
    For my Introduction Text I put “Just enter your email address.” Then I asked my husband to give it a try, and he tried to      log on by tapping on the “Log On” button, so I revised this to say, “To sign up, tap the circle”
    Signup Form – This is your second page of the signup process where they actually enter their email address, etc.
    For my Title I said “Usable marketing ideas and info”
    For my Instructions I said, “Your email address will be secure”
    Confirmation Page – This pops up after they enter their info and press “save”
    For my Title I said “Thanks for signing up!”
    For my Confirmation Message I put, “I’ll keep your email confidential”
    Welcome Email – when you turn this on, the person will get an email from you which hopefully doesn’t go to spam, but if it does, then hopefully they will find it on so that your next emails will arrive okay.  It took several tries before I decided what to write, and hopefully this will shorten the process for you:
      Reply Email:  Hi from Cheri Carroll
      Subject Line:  Thank you for signing up –
      Header Text:  I appreciate your help so much!
      Description:  “Thanks for signing up with AdHelper.biz to get great marketing ideas and information. I try hard to find practical advice that you need in order to make your business grow; please stick with me so I can prove how valuable I can be.  Thanks again, sincerely, Cheri Carroll”
  • THEN YOU HIT “SYNC CONTENT” to make all the stuff stick….or not…..I don’t know why really — I have written to Thread to get better instructions, or maybe they will just use mine.
  • LOG OUT and up pops your sign-in screen!  Then you try out the process, signing yourself in so that you’ll get the email, which you check, and then you log in again to fix everything.
  • VOILA!
